How to evaluate prices, and the people behind them

Every founder and business owner we work with asks us the same thing. How do I evaluate the prices of services, and the people behind them?

It is one of the hardest things in business. You want great people you can trust. You also want to know you are being charged fairly, without using price alone as your guide. We put this guide together to help you do both.

Start with trust. Make sure the people you hire are people you can rely on, who do good work and tell you the truth. Once that is settled, look at the pricing with a critical eye. This guide is for that second step.

How to read the numbers

Every service below shows three market tiers.

Freelance or small agency

A solo operator or a small shop of a few people. You often work with the person doing the work.

Expert or mid-size agency

Senior specialists and boutique teams. This is the middle of the market, and the tier this guide uses as its reference.

Large agency

Big full-service teams with account managers, project managers, and layers of review.

The middle column is the reference price. The small and large columns are the market bands around it. Small work runs about 40 to 60 percent of the middle. Large agency work runs about two to four times the middle.

Business advisory and strategy

This is the thinking that sets direction. What the business is, who it serves, what it charges, and where it goes next. Buy it first and everything after it costs less. Buy it last and you pay to redo the work.

Business advisory and strategy prices, by market tier.

Expert or mid-size is the middle of the market.

Financial and operational foundations

The plumbing of the business. Where the money comes from, where it goes, what your prices should be, and who does what. This work rarely gets sold to you, because it is not glamorous. It is the work that makes every other number on this page mean something.

Financial and operational foundations prices, by market tier.

Financial visibility setup$1,800 to $2,700$4,500$9,000 to $18,000

Brand and identity

How the business looks and sounds, and why people remember it. The wide spread here is real. A logo and a full identity system are different purchases, and plenty of quotes blur the two. Ask what you get, in files and in rules, before you compare prices.

Web and digital

Design and development are two purchases, and they are priced separately here so you can see both. When a quote gives you one number for a whole website, ask which half it covers, how many pages, and who owns the code when it ships.

Email and CRM

Where your customer list lives and how you talk to it. Two very different jobs sit in here. Sending good email to people who already know you is one job. Cold outreach is another, and it is specialist work, so it costs more.

Performance marketing

Paid advertising, and the work that makes the money spent worth spending. Note that the fee sits on top of your ad budget. Some teams charge a flat monthly fee, some charge a share of what you spend, and the two can land far apart.

SEO

The slowest line on this page and the one people quit first. It compounds, and it takes months. Judge it on the work being done, not on a promised position in the results.

Hiring outside the country, honestly

You can buy most of the work above for far less by hiring outside the United States. Here is what the market looks like, as a share of the US price.

Asia freelance platforms

About 10 to 20 percent of the US price.

MENA

About 25 to 40 percent of the US price.

Eastern Europe and Latin America

About 30 to 50 percent of the US price.

The advantages are real

  • You pay less.
  • You reach deep pools of skilled people.
  • Hand work over at the end of your day and get it back in the morning.

So are the challenges

  • Managing the work lands on you, and that is a job.
  • Quality control and revision rounds eat into the savings.
  • Time zones slow every answer.
  • Protecting what you own is harder across borders.

The gap that costs the most

Low prices buy you execution, not strategy. When nobody has decided what the business is doing and why, the cheap version gets built, and then it gets rebuilt. Twice paid is the most expensive way to save money.

The businesses that make this work usually split it. They buy the thinking close to home and the production wherever it makes sense.

Read this as a guide

Every business prices differently, and every quote covers a different pile of work. Treat these numbers as a starting point, not as evidence. Use them to ask better questions, and to make decisions with your eyes open.

Being open about this is part of how we work. If a number on this page helps you push back on a quote somewhere else, the page has done its job.
